Microchip your pet with Northwich Vets
June 21, 2018
June is National Microchip Month – yes, that’s an entire month dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of microchips for your pets, and in case you’re wondering why microchipping is so important, we’re here to explain.
For starters, if you have a dog you’re required by law to have it microchipped and all your information kept up to date, but there are benefits to getting your other pets chipped too, so why not contact us to book an appointment now?
The team at Lostock Gralam firmly believes that all pets, including cats and rabbits, should be microchipped. That way, if they were to unfortunately go missing, the chances of them being reunited with you are much higher.
After all, how many missing cat posters do you see in CW9 7QB?
What is a microchip and how does it work?
A microchip is a tiny piece of computer circuitry about the size of a grain of rice. It is implanted just under your pet’s skin, between the shoulder blades, and is no more painful than a vaccination.
Each chip has its own unique identification number which, along with yours and your pet’s details, are registered for life on a national pet identification database.
Why is a microchip so important?
Collars and tags are still very useful but they are not reliable tools for finding lost pets. Collars often break or fall off and name tags become hard to read over time.
But microchips provide your pet with a permanent form of identification which is simply read with a scanner. So if your pet becomes lost or is stolen and is then found and scanned, all your details will be recovered allowing you to be reunited.
Of course, this is only effective if your contact details are kept updated with your microchipping database, which is why Northwich Vets’ team is so strongly stressing the importance of making sure your contact details are correct.
Microchipping is easy and could make the difference between a lost pet being found or not, so this month you could give your pet the gift of a microchip and yourself some peace of mind. Just call us on 01606 359789 and we’ll be happy to make an appointment or discuss further the benefits of microchipping.
